Is there a difference between flash drives? |
| There’s a world of difference between different types of flash drives. |
What you see on the outside is just the beginning. |
| While color and finish is purely a matter of personal taste, size and style actually have functional considerations as well. Bigger and bulkier USB bodies can take up a lot of space, both in your pocket and in the computer port. Many newer computers have two or three ports placed side by side and these older style USB keys take up too much space to more than one or two of those ports. Likewise, if a USB flash drive has an awkward body style it can hinder the user’s movement while working on the computer, block access to other ports, and be susceptible to breakage and data loss. |
The real work of the USB drive is done on the inside of course. |
| Old school Type A connectors (the kind that have a metal prong protruding from the end) are infamous for their poor fit within computer ports and are apt to break and bend with minor bumps. Modern USB drives use Type B connectors that are fully integrated into the body of the device, eliminating breakage issues and securing a tight connection in the computer port. In fact, most new computers are being manufactured with ports that are only compatible with Type A drives. |
Speed and performance is relative. |
| If you are used to using the old type of cheap flash drive, you don’t know what you are missing. Read/Write speeds are a key factor to consider when buying a flash drive and older flash drive technology (the vast majority of what you find in North America) just can’t keep up. Simply put, read/write speeds refer to the amount of time it takes for the device to scan and transfer data. When you think of how big multi-media, video, and software application files can be, you can understand why read/write speed is important. Many flash drive manufacturers will not list read/write speeds because their performance is so poor. Buyer beware! |
| |
|
| What features should I look for in a flash drive? |
| Look for a USB flash drive that uses new technology. Type B connectors (fully integrated) are a must as many new computers are being made with ports that will only support Type B connectors. Think about versatility and ergonomics and choose flash drives that won’t get in your way or be crushed in tight spots. Speaking of which, consider durability. Cheaper flash drives are susceptible to water damage and body and connector breakage. This can result in the loss or irretrievability of your data. Look for a USB key that will give you flexible usability options. Can you partition it? Does it have enough read/write speed to launch software applications or quickly download/upload files? Is it powerful enough to be compatible with Windows ReadyBoost should my computer require more resources? |
| |
|
| How do I choose the USB flash drive that best suits my purposes? |
If you are buying it for personal use, think about the types of applications and files you will be storing and the amount of memory and performance you will need. Don’t limit yourself by purchasing a USB flash drive with 2 GBs of storage if you plan to store your music or video collection and still want space to store documents. Plan for the future is the best advice we can offer regarding USB purchases.
If you are purchasing USB digital storage devices for corporate use, consider what your choice will say about your company. There is simply no reason to choose a cheap USB drive to reflect your company when modern, stylish, and technically superior devices are available at competitive prices. Consider body styles, finishes, and colors and how your logo, tagline, or contact information will look on them. Think about whether you would like preloaded information installed and if so, what kind of documents or media you would like to include. This will help you estimate the amount of Mega Bytes you will need. |

3. NuSB Performance FAQs |
How do NuSB flash drives compare against other flash drives available in North America? |
Quite simply, they don’t. In North America, NuSB flash drives are in a class of their own. Their style is distinctive and turns heads wherever they are used, their speed and performance is second to none, and their durability is “lifeproof” (well, waterproof actually).
NuSB doesn’t hide – While other manufacturers couch their product descriptions in cautionary adjectives, NuSB stands loud and proud, not afraid to stand behind their product claims. With read/write speeds so slow that it would be an embarrassment to publish them, other USB manufacturers conveniently skip over the details while NuSB can confidently state that our devices can transfer 100 Mega bytes in 5-6 seconds. |
| |
|
| It’s obvious that NuSB flash drives are stylish – is there any functional reason for their style or is it just for show? |
| Each NuSB flash drive was carefully crafted for style and usability. Their elegance and distinctive good looks belie some very well thought out industrial design. With some of the thinnest body types in digital storage, NuSB drives are extremely light and portable and fit into any environment. Locking mechanisms that come into play when the drives are plugged into a computer port ensure optimal ergonomics for the user, flexibility in tight locations, and ample access to other ports, no matter how tightly configured on the host computer. |
| |
|
| What is Read/Write speed and why does it matter? |
| Read/Write speeds are a key factor to consider when buying a flash drive and older flash drive technology (the vast majority of what you find in North America) just can’t keep up. Simply put, read/write speeds refer to the amount of time it takes for the device to scan and transfer data. When you think of how big multi-media, video, and software application files can be, you can understand why read/write speed is important. Many flash drive manufacturers will not list read/write speeds because their performance is so poor. |

|
| What are common hazards to USB flash drives and what has NuSB done to minimize those risks for me? |
USB flash drives are subject to all the hazards of modern life. Water damage from a spilled beverage, rain, or an unexpected dip in the pool is a common issue for most flash drives. Happily NuSB flash drives don’t suffer at all from exposure to any amount of water. Their unique unibody design makes them completely waterproof while integrated slots for wrist bands and keychains eliminate the risk of small parts breaking, leading to the loss of your device and data.
Type A connectors are infamous for bending and breaking if bumped while in a computer port. NuSB uses only Type B connectors that provide integrated connectors that are impervious to any sort of bending or breakage and form a secure connection in any computer port. |
